Newby here, great forum!
I'm looking into getting general liability insurance, what is a ball park dollar amount for an operator with a single sedan in the DC Metro area?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lol, thats funny.

ASAP, there is no such policy that will cover everything that the auto will not cover.

When you do procure GL coverage, make certain that the policy is not a premises liability only policy and that it does provide off-premises liability coverage as well.

While there is not a lot of GL exposure, there still is some.

You will need, both; you MUST have automotive liability. If you want to work DC, you will have to get a WMATC Carrier number, and they require 1.5 million in automotive liability coverage for sedans, 5 million for bigger cars.

That will be the coverage you use when you have a fender bender or serious auto accident.

The general liability will provide coverage for incidents such as a client falling on their face at your office while paying a bill.

Here is a link to the rules you will have to live by:

OK, so what is the difference and does a Limo operator need both?

I work DC-MD-VA, and pay in the area of $7,000.00 per 120 stretch.

That is for $1.5 million automotive liability (the minimum for a WMATC certificate and for DOT/MC numbers for that type of car), and $2 million general liability. I have an operating area of 200 air miles from my base in any direction now. Each time I expand that, my rates rise.

You will also need Worker's Comp, which in my case is $1,700.00 per employee, per year. The only exception to the WC requirement that I know of is a single proprietor operating only one vehicle. (MD based operation.)A Single Prop is a horrible way to go; if you ever get sued, you could loose everything.

Sedans in this area will run $7,000.00 to $15,000.00 per year, depending on what car you operate. The LTC, Cadillac, or Mercedes are cheaper to insure in this area. The 300Cs are sky high, (15K range).

My rates are of course based on my operation, experience (very little-new operation), and my level of risk in the opinion of my underwriter. Yours may differ.

PM me if you need the name of a good commercial insurance broker in this area.
