After reading the June 2007 issue of LCT regarding DOT Audits, I wanted to let you all know that I have a copy of the fax/letter that is sent to operators prior to the audit.
If you have not seen this and/or you would like to see it let me know, I can e-mail it you in a PDF file. Even if you are strictly intrastate, you may want to see it. It is a list of very valuable information that you should always have on hand for your business. Answering any of these questions with "I don't know" or "I can't find it" is unacceptable and you should all hold yourself to the highest standard of professionalism possible. Oh, come on Deano......have you even read my article yet on preparing for the audit? It covered everything I went through. I was commended by the DOT inspector for being ready. There are two articles in the current issue. One is from the view of Steve Levin who had an inspector grill him for two days - as he wasn't ready. Mine lasted two hours!
Maybe you didn't realize I was the author before referring someone to ABA and UBA huh? |

For DOT info I go to the American Bus Association and the United Motorcoach Association. I find, in general, that the bus people are better informed than the limousine people.

That guy needs to call the Office of Professional Responsibility, or the OIG for the particular branch of the DOT involved. That kind of behavior, or irresponsibility does get people disciplined or fired. Additionally, that operator now has grounds for a legal tort claim against the DOT for $$$ lost while awaiting the paperwork that was not filed in a timely manner. Believe me, these guys (BTFAs- Big Time Federal Agents)will turn on their own in a minute if there has been misconduct. |

I know Salicete- I have to call myself into the office daily for a talk, wondering "what the hell made you do something so stupid." I've been close to firing myself MANY times!! But, I brown nose the owner, so he keeps me around like a pet (or dog to kick?) He really doesn't pay me much either. Two shillings a day + food.
It all just a game. I know of one operator who was grounded just because of his attitude towards the DOT inspector. (not gonna tell this person how to run their business!) Took him 2 month to kiss up enough to get back to business. He had no violations, but the inspector purposely FORGOT to turn in the inspection report or something? Guess some of them REALLY like the power trip? |

Yep, looks like the papers from my last audit. A lot of needless paperwork.
My audit went smoothly. The inspector has a laptop in your office. He askes for something, you produce it, he checks it off. I was kind of surprised that I (the owner) had to have an employment application on file. As if I don't have enough papers with my name on it? So I filled out one right then and there. (I asked him if he'd excuse me for a few minutes, so I could interview myself to see if I was even remotely qualified.) Some of these guys have a sense of humor. It's either Pass/ Fail. But, they will let you know what your missing the first audit. After that you get fined if you don't keep it up. If you go Interstate- you will have an audit in the first 90 days. If you pass, then you go into the lottery for future inspections. |

It really isn't that difficult once it gets started, and for the smaller operators (1-5 drivers/revenue units) it's not that bad.

Great information to have; but it makes me think I should stay intrastate for a while.
It is a terribly expensive process both in terms of actual cash expenses and time usage, especially for a small operator like me. Anyway, thanks for posting the questionnaire; it will definitely come in handy when I decide to expand my service area across state lines. |

I am trying to attach the pdf file, but when I hit post now, it gives me an error saying that allowed files are picture only. Is there something else that I can do?
