Gunny,

In November 2004 the HCPTC kicked off an "independent" study of the safety of non-QVM/CMC vehicles, specifically the large SUV stretches. Have you received any updates or status on this since then? It was targeted for early-2005 completion.

Terrible story about a head on a couple of days ago on Long Island. Looks as though the front of the stretch just exploded. Maybe one of the computer gurus can link it to this site.

Here you go Tony

Do note the reference to the limo being split in half in NYC in 1987 is BS or important facts left out.

The accident happened on Long Island, 120" leaving the reception, car drag racing in excess of 100MPH broadsided it and the limo did split killing the newlyweds. Any vehicle that gets nailed in such a fashion would have the same result unless it's a tank. Just another example of Government Spin.

Another unique revelation of the CUTR report is that the industry is regulated by NHTSA. Always under the impression it was DOT and the FMCSA. Operators from Jersey should enjoy reading this report starting on page 8 of the transcripts. Money well spent!

Haven'y heard nor seen anything published yet but I will snoop around and report back. I'm willing to bet as this is a study ($15,000. worth) of safety issues with the 15+ SUV's and unless I'm missing the boat somewhere not much will come of it (maybe why no news). Over the years I've never read anything in trade magazines or seen reports of these vehicles being accident prone, folding in half on the expressway etc.. Maybe somone else has more "real life" in depth figures other than test track studies (that would eliminate half the vehicles on the road). I would like to point out though that this study was only initiated when the HCPTC failed to receive blessings from the Legislature to regulate and collect permitting fees for these type vehicles. Until that point there was never a safety issue.
