A few years ago, I was on a run in downtown Los Angeles. My pax had gone to watch a comedy show and I had two hours downtime which I used to go eat.
On my way, I came upon a car fire with a man standing beside his car in a panic. I pulled in behind it, jumped out, got my fire extinguisher from the trunk, carefully opened the hood and began my futire attempt to extinguish it. It continued to grow in size. I ran into a courtyard of an apartment complex we were parked in front of and got a hose and ran back to the car and tried somemore. I did manage to confine it to the engine compartment but the LAFD finally put it out. Some bystanders said, "you're not from arounf here are you?" and went on to say they had never seen a stranger to such a thing. I told them, where I am from, you simply don't turn your back on someone in need. I have always remembered that exchange. Yesterday, I saw a car which stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. Within seconds, there must have been six people who left their own cars, pushed her to safey and went on their way with one man staying behind to assist her with her car. I was happy to live in Bakersfield, CA. So, I began to wonder.....is it Bakersfield or is it all over except the mean streets of Los Angeles? |

In some parts of Boston you would have got your @$$ beat for putting out the fire and the car did not get totaled for the insurance.

There was a great story some years ago about a TC with a flat on the Belt Parkway I believe in Brooklyn.
Another TC limo type stops to assist in the changing of the tire & keep traffic away sort of action. When the job was accomplished, the driver with the flat asked the other for his name & address at the request of the passenger. The passenger paid off the drivers mortgage. That is just the way it is in a small town. Out here in the country there is always an exchange of who will go first at 4 way stops. By this I mean who motions who to go first. Every time I have to go to Detroit, I am reminded why I moved out here in the Country.
When was the last time the EMS thanked you for an assist with lifting a heavy Patient. We do it all the time out here in the country. You would probably be arrested for interfereing if you did this in the Big City. David E. Merrill |
