No Not Carey/AVIS
I came across a story of a young 19 year old Marine who served in Vietnam: PFC Joe Carey was on patrol with his platoon when they came upon a river. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a ripple in the water & what he thought was human feet. Carey stripped down to his scivies & with just a K-Bar (fighting knife) he slipped into the water. He was warned to be watchful of crocodiles by his plt Sgt. Carey waded to the point that the ripple occured & as one can imagine in a place like Vietnam, the banks of the river was overgrown with vegetation, in particular tall grass. Carey spotted the feet & snuck up & engaged the VC killing him. Carey then spotted the opening to a cave & he entered & to make a long story short, when it was all over, PFC Carey killed or captured 16 VC. For this action, PFC Carey was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V (for valor). For all of us that wore a uniform in defense of our Nation, men like this set a legacy that we had to follow. Pictured is this 19 year old being presented with the award (small photo, best I can do) ![]() |
