What would you do? I think I know the answer but here goes anyway. Last Summer, I booked a Bus for a Wedding in the afternoon, 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. I made my usual 10% on the deal. A couple of weeks later, I got a request for a Bus for a Bachelorette party on the same day but starting at 8:00 P.M. on the route the bus was taking back to his terminal. I think you can see where I am going here but I booked the Party, charged the Client the same fare as I would had it been the a fresh Bus. By this I mean dead head and all. As a result, the same Bus was used for both events, but because the Bus did not burn up any additional dead head, I only got charged for one dead head. As a result, I made about $500.00 on a deal that I should have only made about $150.00 on.

What would you have done?????

I should add Dave, That if you know that that driver did not receive any tip (or even if he did) from the customer or prehaps you know that the company does not pay him overtime. I would not be opposed to you throwing him down $50.00 for his long day. After all by him agreeing to to do both jobs he made your windfall possible. What if your farm company could not find any driver to do an all day charter and had to send out a fresh bus with a fresh driver, would you not have only made your $150 on this situation?

Completely optional but I would rather have a good reputation among the drivers of another company as they will most likely be working for you in the future. And do not think for a minute they do not know you made a little extra on this one.

Heck, I would even go out of my way for some owners of other companies before I would do it for my own boss. Simply because of the way they have treated me in the past.

I agree, a little luck is a wonderful thing, pity it does not happen all of the time. Well done.

Steve is right on...the second you would have cut them a deal on the travel time you would have gotten a canx phone call on the first job and then lost several hundred bucks b/c of the deal you cut the second guy.
It's not as bad if it were your own vehicles, but when booking farm-out's I have found it is pretty imperative to stick to your pricing policies, no exceptions, no deals. Enjoy the extra dollars, they were fairly earned.

I think it is fine Dave, they are two seperate jobs. What if the first one canceled and you did not charge the second one for all you expences, you would have to go back to them and raise the rate and possible lose that charter also. Two seperate people agreed to your rate as you stated, that's the end of it. If it cost you less you do not owe them a refund, just as if it cost you more you would not expect them to fork over more money.

Your farm out company got paid for the entire day also, they got all thier travel time, without you thier equipment would not have been utilized to the extent it was, so they are happy as well.

What you engaged in here is economies of scale and the business owner is the rightful recipient of windfalls from economies of scale. Enjoy it, it does not happen all that often!!
