You're returing to the vehicle after a shopping trip
You get into your vehicle Start her up Look into the rearview mirror to back out of the parking space & discover some asshole has placed a flyer there You jump out to remove the paper The asshole jumps in & takes off with the car Of couse ladies will not take their purse when they jump out so the asshole gets two prizes This is the basic warning being passed to motorist by the FHP Color Commentary by Gunny "Suing Tampa Limo Regulator In Federal Court For The Right To Use Fuel Efficient Vehicles & Violations Of Federal & State Preemptions. The "bump and run" hyjack is a all too common modus operandi here in southwest BC. The people who bumped the guy are part of the gang. They sit about two blocks from the target intersection, pull out when they see a car they want, bump the victim at the intersection, the driver gets out and leave the car running, the guy waiting at the light jumps in and everyone takes off.
However, if the person is smart enough to shut down and take his keys, they beat him up, and take the car anyway. There is no legal way here to stop this from happening. You are required by law to exchange info otherwise you are guilty of leaving the scene of an accident. As it's Canada, personal weapons are out as well. To top it all off, if the accident doesn't seem to be more than $2000 and has no injuries, the police will not attend. About your only recourse is to fake a neck injury, lock your doors, and call the cops on your cellphone. If the thieves try to bust you out, then you can drive away, but only to the nearest Police Station. Really sad state of affairs. |

There was an accident just recently on one of our highways here in Dallas. A passerby who happened to be an off duty fire fighter pulled over to see if the accident victims were ok when another passerby dropped off their passenger who ended up hijacking the firefighters truck!
Unbelievable! |

Anytime someone carelessly leaves their keys in the ignition, they are putting themselves at risk.
Too often, I see people at gas stations in upper class neighborhoods who just leave keys in their BMW/Benz/Lexus and walk around. All I think about is how easy they could get ripped off. I once witnessed a carjacking right in front of me, less than 15 feet away. Basically a guy was lightly rear-ended - he gets out to inspect the damage but left his car door wide open, engine idling. An unknown guy tip-toed up and hopped in, with the owner standing at the back bumper, looking in the opposite direction. Before the car owner even knew what had conspired, his car was already pulling away. He ran and grabbed the rear window (which was open) but the car was already moving fast. He tried to run but as the vehicle speed increased, the mans feet couldnt keep up. He let go and did some nice cartwheels, flipping over his head on the hot, black asphalt. At the same time this had happened, the people that had rear ended him, also hopped in their car. By the time the victim was laying in the street, the people at fault were already screeching around the corner. And this happened on the outskirts of one of the nicest neighborhoods in all CA, "La Jolla". Maybe you've heard of it or been there. I am guilty - I used to also leave my keys in the ignition and not think twice. Now I always think about the keys and i'm always careful, no matter where I am. |

Sorry Gunny I missed that.
Watch out for the one where you stand at the red light and someone taps your rear bumper, you come out and next thing you know they jump in while you are in the back checking. |

As one of a few ladies that post on this forum on a semi-regular basis – I want to thank you Gunny, for being this to our attention. It is nice that you thought enough of us on here to bring us this warning, and with addition commentary no less. I guess you are not a hardass as some would say.
