North County times
SAN DIEGO -- A Carlsbad limousine driver died early Monday morning after being ejected from the vehicle on a San Diego offramp, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man -- identified by the county medical examiner's office as James (Jay) Shannon, 61 -- was driving a 2003 Lincoln limousine on northbound Interstate 805 toward Sorrento Valley Road when he crashed on the exit at about 3:11 a.m., highway patrol officer Larry Landeros said.

The vehicle, which was traveling at an unknown speed, drifted for an unknown reason and sideswiped the steel guard rail, authorities said.

The vehicle then overturned, throwing the man out and causing fatal injuries, Landeros said. The limousine landed on its wheels and about 100 feet of the guard rail was damaged.

Crews shut the offramp down for more than seven hours for repairs and investigation, prompting a traffic alert that remained in place until 10:58 a.m.

Shannon is survived by his son, also named James, the medical examiner's office said.

PLEASE EVERYONE REMEMBER, WE ARE ALL CO-WORKERS AS WELL AS COLLEAGUES OUT THERE. LETS HOPE HIS FAMILY CAN GET THROUGH THIS HORRIBLE TIME.

I MYSELF HAVE STOPPED A FEW TIMES ALONG THE ROAD TO HELP FELLOW CHAUFFEURS OUT THERE. I WOULD SEE A BREAK DOWN WITH THE CHAUFFEUR HAVING PASSENGERS AND ARE ANYWHERE FROM 10 MINUTES TO 1 HOUR AWAY FROM THE AIRPORT AND I HAVE TAKEN THEM IN THE LIMO I WAS DRIVING TO HELP OUT THE FELLOW CHAUFFEUR AND TOOK NO MONEY. MAYBE ONE DAY SOMEONE WILL RETURN THE FAVOR IF I AM ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

POINT IS, WE ARE ALL CHAUFFEURS OUT THERE AND NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR EACHOTHER, CAUSE IF WE DO NOT, WHO WILL. THATS HOW I FEEL.

Thanks for your time,

I will more than second this.
As an EMT for over 25 years I have seen my share of accidents. Seat belts do save lives.
I also want to say for those who don't have automatic locks. Lock your door also. A door that flies open and shut during an accident, even with a seat belt can servely injury and kill. That is why many companies put auto locks on doors. Be safe.

The Tampa area has seen a rash of youngsters killed in accidents of which a large percentage has been caused by being ejected from the vehicle due to non-use of seat belts. This Gent was ejected from the vehicle per the news article of which I will assume was caused by not wearing a seat belt. Hence, my statement of reminder of seat belt usage of which I am a strong advocate of.
